The Chronicles of Narnia audiobook 1: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight. At the sound of his roar, sorrow will be no more. When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death. And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”
The Chronicles of Narnia audiobook 1: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe follows four ordinary children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie, who are evacuated from London to the English countryside following the onset of World War II. In Professor Digory Kirke’s house, they uncover a wardrobe that leads to the enchanted kingdom of Narnia. The Pevensie children assist Aslan, a talking lion, in saving Narnia from the terrible White Witch, who has ruled over Narnia for a century of eternal winter with no Christmas. The children become kings and queens of this new realm, establishing the Narnia Golden Age and leaving a legacy that will be unearthed in subsequent volumes.
Although The Chronicles of Narnia audiobook 1: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe isn’t flawless, but they are magnificent stories that paved the way for so many more fantasy realms that followed. Sure, they have an allegorical Christian context, and some of Lewis’ language and words are no longer politically suitable. But, if you can overlook these minor faults, Narnia is a genuinely magical realm, and the stories are so classic that I will never forget them.

Aslan, the lion, is the sole constant throughout the story. The Narnian universe is also quite well constructed, which is most likely due to Lewis’ friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien. Lewis transports you to other countries, the eastern sea, and the underworld. Also encompasses the whole time period of Narnia, from creation to destruction. Which is a fantastic idea for a series. There’s a lot of good in this The Chronicles of Narnia audiobook 1: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, including magic, honor, heroism, and friendship. Excellent for both children and adults. There’s a lot to admire here, and the Christian symbolism is only visible in a few books. It was never distracting to me.
Reading a children’s book as an adult, especially one that is well-known and well-loved, is always an odd experience. Of course, you can’t alter the fact that your comprehension of life has changed your perspective, and that you now see the world through different lenses. As you listen to The Chronicles of Narnia audiobook 1: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe masterwork, you can try imagine yourself reading it to a kid, perhaps let your inner child to approach this magnificent story with a more childlike heart.
