The Guest List audiobook is more of a fantastic character study and a twist on the usual locked room mystery—on a dark and stormy night. As you flip the pages, the plot draws you in more and more. Excellent writing. Before anything occurs, we get to know all of the characters well enough to care about them. This one is done as a thriller rather than a mystery. The first person present tense goes back and forth in time.
The Guest List audiobook is a fast-paced, gossipy, dramatic thriller in which each of the five primary narrators is definitely concealing something. Foley soon won readers over to three of the four points of view, and while no one particularly enjoyed the other two (Jules and Johnno), you will become immersed in their stories and understood their worries and self-doubts.
In the present, people wander outside the marquee to find out who is dead, while the other chapters explain the events of the day before, leading up to the climactic reveal. It’s brilliant because the mystery isn’t just about who the perpetrator is, but also about who the victim is. You might easily imagine it could be any of them, victim or perpetrator. There’s also something extremely appealing about being privy to all of this shittalk and gossip about individuals and waiting to see how the entire situation blows up. And The Guest List audiobook certainly blows up.
Over the course of the weekend, the tale is presented from several perspectives, with the corpse and the killer revealed at the conclusion. The location was highly atmospheric, with the plot utilizing some of the island’s past history and legend to create a gothic mood. Because of the different points of view, the chapters were kept brief, and the plot of The Guest List audiobook never became bored. Each chapter ended on a mini-cliffhanger, leaving you wanting more.
